TRINIDAD THEATRE WORKSHOP
"The Flagship of the Theatre Movement in the Caribbean! "
Professor Rex Nettleford
ABOUT
Trinidad Theatre Workshop (TTW) was founded in 1959 by Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott, his twin brother, Roderick Walcott, along with other internationally acclaimed performers like Beryl Mc Burnie, Errol Jones, Stanley Marshall, Fred Hope and Eunice Alleyne. TTW and has been dubbed "The Flagship of the Theatre Movement in the Caribbean." |
In its inaugural season, the Workshop presented The Blacks by Jean Genet, Eric Roach's Belle Fanto, and The Road by Wole Soyinka. TTW also introduced Trinidad and Tobago’s first theatre season with plays which have defined “the classics” emerging from this country: Walcott’s The Joker of Seville, Ti-Jean and His Brothers, Dream on Monkey Mountain, and Henri Christophe among them. The Workshop has spanned five decades of theatre production and most recently staged Dennis Scott's An Echo in the Bone, earlier this year. There is almost always something going on at TTW: plays, concerts, conversations, classes, art exhibits and more.
TTW has also partnered with various international companies for international performances including: New York Shakespeare Festival Company, Negro Ensemble (NY), Boston Playwrights Theatre, Arena Stage (Washington DC), National Theatre Festival (Singapore), Caribbean Festival (Rotterdam). and the Inaugural Caribana Festival (1967, Toronto). Most recently, we partnered with Stella Adler Studio of Acting from NY, the Ministry of Education and BG TT, to conduct workshops for the teachers of CXC Theatre Arts, who are acquainting themselves with the new CXC Theatre Arts curriculum.
The objective of Trinidad Theatre Workshop is to encourage expression of our Caribbean realities, through performance. Through our School for the Arts, New Playwright's Workshop, and studio productions of new work, we are constantly working to train actors, develop scripts, and create innovative theatre.
