CLAVERY, RODERICK
Born 27 November, 1927 in Trinidad and Tobago, Roderick was the eldest of the four children of Cecil and Imelda Clavery. Always an avid performer, Roderick was invited to join the Geoffrey Holder Dance Group in Port of Spain. Soon thereafter, the group was invited to New York to perform in Truman Capote's Broadway musical, "The House of Flowers. The show, which featured Pearl Bailey in the starring role and introduced Dihann Caroll to show business, enjoyed a run of 165 performances at the Alvin Theater on Broadway and was the first theatrical performance outside of Trinidad to feature the steel pan . Cast as a steel-pan player, along with fellow Trinidadians, Alphonso Marshall (now Austin Stoker), and Mike Alexander, Roderick, Mike and Alphonso went on to accompany Enid Mosier (later known as Vivian Bonnell) as the Trinidad Steel Drum Band on several recordings and performances at the popular Village Vanguard Club in New York. In 1961, Roderick wrote and arranged the traditional Trinidadian Christmas song, "Baby Boy," which was recorded and performed by Harry Belafonte.
